Lemon Protein Mug Cake

If you love Lemons you will love this Lemon Protein Mug Cake! I love lemon! I have so many Lemon Recipes on my blog it has to be kind of apparent.  For the last three years, I have asked for a Meyer’s Lemon Tree for my Birthday to no avail maybe this will be the year I get it-hint hint fam! But even if I don’t fresh lemons will always be in my kitchen available to make a yummy treat and so many other benefits!

Lemon water is a popular fitness trend but do you know why?

Benefits of Lemons you may not have heard

There are lots of benefits to lemons but here are a few that people don’t often mention:

1.Great for Digestion-

That’s why the Lemon Water Trend began in America we are always looking for a solution to our digestive issues. According to Fox News Health, About 74% of Americans experience daily Gastrointestinal Discomfort. Some people are now looking for natural remedies and adding lemon- even if it’s in the form of Lemon Water to your diet can help aid your digestion.1 Lemons are an excellent source of soluble fiber which especially in the form of pectin which is a soluble fiber that helps slow down the digestion of sugar and starches meanwhile reducing your blood sugar levels.  You need to ingest a lot of lemon pulp and skin to get the fiber benefits lemons to offer.  That is why most people use juiced lemon to help increase their lemon pulp intake. Although, that is the theory most people don’t juice the required amount of lemons to help improve gut health if they did they would help with their digestion.

2. Great Anemia protection-

Any fruit that contains Vitamin C and Citric Acid is a great addition to someone who is trying to absorb iron that occurs in plant foods.  Helping people absorb more iron from their foods can be helpful for those who are Iron deficient.  Veggies rich in Iron like Kale, Greens, Broccoli coupled with lemons can be a powerhouse in getting helping with iron absorption from plants instead of animal sources of iron.

Adding more lemon to your diet will help you get the absorption from plant sources that is harder for us to absorb than animal sources of iron.  Helping add protection against anemia.

3. Great to prevent kidney stones-

According to News Medical Life Science, “They noted that there was an over four times rise of kidney stones among women and the incidence had doubled among men over these three decades.” Mostly because of the overprocessed American diet and our body and the lack of water and overconsumption of oxalates in our foods. 2

Lemons are a great natural remedy for chronic kidney stones.  Studies have concluded that the high levels of citric acid found in lemons help to increase urine volume and pH which makes it less likely for kidney stones to form.3 Consuming a minimum of half a cup of lemon juice daily can have these positive preventative effects on kidney stones.4

4. Great for weight loss

This is probably the most common reason I found people drinking lemon water because they believe it helps them lose weight.  It does but not to the extent that you think. Studies have revealed Lemons have polyphenols (which I have written about before) that helps you lose weight but a healthy diet and exercise is necessary to achieve quantifiable results. 5

5. Great for your teeth

Studies have shown, The chemical properties of lemon are great for tooth pain, cleaning and cleaning your mouth naturally.  Seek a toothpaste with lemon in it or add a drop to your mouthwash routine. It’s great to eliminate the bacteria in your mouth and neutralizes bad breath.

6. Great for Internal Bleeding

This is something that really surprised me in my research. Lemons contain antiseptic and coagulant effects that have helped stop internal bleeding.  Some people use it as a remedy for things like nosebleeds because of the coagulant effect.  Put some lemon juice on a cotton ball and apply to a nosebleed and watch it magically stop.

7. Soothes Respiratory Disorders

Lemons are a rich source of Vitamin C which makes them great to combat respiratory issues and breathing problems.  Drinking lemon juice in water, diffusing Lemon essential oils can help assist with breathing and respiratory disorders.

Not only does lemon have all these and so many more benefits but they taste great too!  Give this 90-second mug cake a try next time you are looking for a delicious lemon treat.

Were there any facts that surprised you about lemons?

Celebrating this Birthday with a Champagne Toast

Celebrating this Birthday with a Champagne Toast

This summer has been pretty extraordinary and I believe the cause for cheers! I can’t think of a better way to end it than a champagne toast for my 36th birthday.  I have gained so much in the past year things that I have prayed for and to see how they have unfolded has been short of fantastic.  My thirty-fifth year I had so many first times.

My First Time Hiking

I  went hiking for the first time.  It was nothing that I had imagined it to be and such an amazing experience I ended up going twice. Live Life on Purpose Today Beginners hiking trip was a great first-time experience. I was guided up Bear Mountain in New York by Adventure for the Soul Retreats and Events founder Bettina Peets and walked through experience by Kawanzaa King.

I hate to admit it, but it was so much fun exploring and navigating the mountain. By the end of the 3.9-mile hike, I just wanted to get in the car and drive-“What a hike?” My hips, feet and everything hurt and it was another humbling experience that I am not as in shape as I thought.

I plan on doing more hiking this year I am taking a trip out west to see the beauty America has to offer, and I need to be ready to hike,On my trip. Until I go West I plan on hiking and exploring the East Coast more this year.

My First Figure Competition

I achieved a lifelong dream of competing in a Figure Competition which deserved a toast this year.  It was the scariest thing I have done yet it empowered me more than I could imagine.  It taught me to do the things I want to do despite the naysayers.  The competition taught me that I could have self-control, commitment, and dedication.  And that moment I took that first strut on stage will never be forgotten. It taught me to celebrate the things I do-win or lose. And not compare myself to others. I had lots of gainz both physically and mentally from experience.

Setbacks this year

There were also some setbacks this year.  My first significant injury had me down and out for the first few months of the year.  It taught me to appreciate what my body can do and to test my limits.  It strengthened my faith even more with days of disappointments and unplanned events. Being put on your butt for a few months is a great way to reset and assess your life. I did too much before was busy being busy. This year I want to be intentional with my life and not feel the need to do so much.

Be Present this Year

I have also watched my little divas grow so much this year and left the Mom of Tween and battling through the Mom of Teen stage of life.  I am not sure how older parents deal with these teenagers, but I am grateful for my youth.

My oldest has had me on my toes this year, and as we prepare for high school. It has dawned on me that I only have four more years with my baby before she takes on the world.  I will never get these days back, so I am celebrating all the moments, big and small.  So there are some things that I am going to do differently this year.

While my big one is going to Highschool my baby is on her way to PreSchool. This Mama needs to be present and hold on to every second. Enjoy life and make time for those that I love.

So these are 7 things that I am doing for my 36th year!

  1. I am not competing in a Figure Competition this year. Although, I loved the experience it took to much time, money and social time with friends.
  2. Doing more things that intrigue me. For too long I tested the waters or just waited for the right time to do things. I plan on just doing more and expecting less this year.
  3. Making moments count. Especially with my daughters. I want them to remember moments and not things. I plan on being more present for the people around me and jumping in with the crowd rather than watching it which I tend to do when overwhelmed.
  4. Spending time with friends. I have a few fantastic friends that I have not spent as much time as I would like because I have let life get in the way. This year I am going to make more time for those people in my life.
  5. Celebrating the small things. I feel like we are too busy commiserating and sweating the small stuff why not celebrate the small stuff.
  6. Counting the gainz, not the days. When training to compete, it’s a countdown of the days until your competition. I am changing my motivation to getting stronger in the gym, not a certain date to get too.
It’s been a colossal mind-shift but it’s helping me to get back to enjoying my gym time and not feeling pressure.
  7. Poppin’ Bottles and Sharing the love. Say what? Something else that motivated me last year is to help other women not only in fitness but in all areas.  Support other women are working hard to achieve their dream.

I am excited to be able to share with you a new Athleisure line from Fit and Flirty.  Anna opened her online store on August 15th, and she has some adorable tanks and shirts that celebrate the finer things in life.

Fit and Flirty tanks are really comfortable, soft and have fun messages and different styles. I love the cap sleeves muscle tanks too.  I am celebrating with a virtual toast to Anna for following her vision and launching her new Champagne Athleisure line.

Safer Skincare with Everclen

Cleaning Up my Skincare

I have been looking for safer skincare since I have found out that I have a wheat allergy. Since knowing what has been affecting my hyperpigmentation. I have been on a mission to have clear skin the natural way. I don’t need a mask, treatment anything I want to improve my skin without Toxic Chemicals. My diet alone has made a vast improvement. Living wheat free, mostly dairy free (I still love Cheese, and Vegan Cheese doesn’t have the variety for my passion for yummy gourmet cheese, and I need to detox, seriously). Wasn’t it till I had watched a documentary on Whats up with wheat?  It was eye-opening, and I suggest that you check it out if you are wondering why this Gluten-Intolerance, Wheat Allergy is becoming an epidemic.

Wheat affecting my skin too

I learned a lot about digestion and gut health but what shocked me was that we produce so much wheat in America that we are putting it in everything and that includes skincare and hygienic products. Have you ever notice skincare labeled “wheat-free?” I didn’t until I found out that it is in our skincare products and yes, it’s not a given that is wheat-free. Wheat is in so many products that American’s consume and if you have an allergy like me the products I eat and use on a daily basis can be making me sick and symptoms that I have been dealing with for over eight years can be irritated or worse.

What’s in that?

My new concern of “What’s in everything?” I found Everclen which has been a God sent for my skin! I have been using the toner, lotion and eye cream along with Black Soap for a cleanser. It has dramatically improved the look and feel of my skin.

The Never List

Now, I am doing my research on this allergy-friendly skincare.

In the past when I explored the Toxic Intake affecting weight loss I wrote about the American Standards and protection or lack thereof when it comes to skincare. It’s nice that they’re skincare companies that despite what the law allows are taking extra precautions to protect their customers. I appreciate the effort so that I don’t have to add another concern such as which of the 1500 chemicals are in my lotion that I put on my skin and takes less than 20 seconds to be absorbed into my bloodstream.

beautycounterchallenge

 What did I think?

I love the lotion my skin feels hydrated without feeling greasy or caked on. Since I workout almost daily I look for a facial moisturizer light and doesn’t clog my pores.  My skin also had no flare ups while on the product.

The toner which is what I used first after I cleanse my face and post workout. It is refreshing and the perfect cool blast I need after gettting all sweaty with my workouts.

The eye cream was something that I particularly like because of my seasonal allergies, lack of sleep and although I hate to admit it age. I have bags it’s a lovely gift from my mother.  Never thought about using eye cream until recently.

This stuff is fantastic even when I was dead tired there was a very noticeable difference!! I have entirely adopted Everclen for my new skincare line. It has no perfumes that would irritate your skin, and it is so light compared to other skincare products that I have tried.  My teen daughter also uses it, and she has extremely sensitive skin even some hypoallergenic products irritate.

Ever since I have found Everclen, I feel that I am using a product that won’t harm me in the future. It’s safe and gentle enough for the most sensitive skin and the essential thing in skincare is that it works.  This is one of those shouting from the rooftops because I love this product so much!

Being confident without makeup is something that I have never had before but nowadays I opt for no makeup versus covering up my dark spots, and that is all because of my new skin routine with Everclen.

Are you looking for a skincare line? Have you ever heard of Everclen?

3 Years Ago I Started this Weight Loss Journey

Three Years Ago I started my weight loss journey

Three years ago I started my weight loss journey so; I guess it’s my anniversary! When August 4th came this year I questioned myself, “Should I celebrate it? Write about it? Are people sick of hearing me talk about it?” That’s when the whisper,

1 Thessalonians 2:4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts.

which reminded me why I do what I do!

Why did I start my weight loss journey?

Three years ago today I decided I had enough!

I needed to do something different!

Lonely, depressed and a Stay at Home Mom of three little diva’s I connected through Social Media, and that’s where I began my journey.

That is where I began holding my self-accountable through blog post and Social Media of the frustrations and triumphs of weight loss.

A friend gave me the idea. I told her privately that I wanted to journal my weight loss and she told me to share it on my Instagram (like everyone else) does and I did.  Thanks, Toni by the way because I have met some fantastic people through this journey.

Being vulnerable and sharing the realities of weight loss and I found others like me.

When I began this journey, I never started intending on creating a business. I was seeking a program that catered to Christian Women, and that is what I am beginning to develop three years later.

This all began because I was tired of being tired.  I didn’t feel like I was walking in the body I was meant to have. I saw other fit people running outside or working out at the park (because you would not catch me at a gym) and I wanted to be like them. But I had a lot of excuses no time, no money, and no clue.

I used to hate exercise

Growing up my parents never spanked us they chose an alternative form of discipline that has it owns consequences.  My parents would use “grounding us in our rooms” and exercise drills as punishment. Little offenses would be things like pushups, planks; wall sits for extended amounts of time.  Mile runs for more significant crimes or solitary confinement in my room for two weeks.  I was raised as the oldest of six children, so I spent a lot of time in my room and doing pushups, planks and wall sit.

Although my parent’s intentions were good, and children do need discipline,  the method now that we are older, is questionable. All but my youngest sibling will tell you that we despise exercise. Why punish ourselves as adults? Yet, the way our genes work it’s highly necessary to exercise to stay healthy and eat what we please. This, as I have shared before, is not my first significant weight loss journey.  Or the most weight I have ever lost yet, it will be my last.  By changing my attitude from resentment to worship has been a game changer.

For God’s Glory

This weight loss journey I was motivated by something different than in the past.  In the past, I was a Christian but not a Follower. Before I believed in God but had no real relationship.  This time not only do I believe in God but I have taken the time to get to know Him.  My external is a direct reflection of my internal;  From what I put in my mouth to what I put in my heart can be seen.  So, when I hesitated to celebrate my third year anniversary.  I went directly to Him. This isn’t to boast on what I did but to show what Christ has created in me.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Why I do what I do?

There is absolute power in prayer, worship, and devotion.  Just like exercise and “clean” or Biblically-based eating has taught me.  The more you do it, the more it becomes second nature.  At this point, I am a statistics and a testimony.

According to the National Weight Loss Registry, “We have also started to learn about how the weight loss was accomplished: 45% of registry participants lost the weight on their own, and the other 55% lost weight with the help of some type of program.”

I can show that a program, consistent effort will get results. Most importantly I can show what happens when you use Scripture, prayer, and devotion as your motivation.

I really don’t believe I could have achieved what I achieved in the last three years without God. In the past when I have tried it on my own, I have cheated or failed.

My goal is now to be a light for His glory and share where my strength, motivation, and faith comes from in all that I do.

What I do differently than I did three years ago?

I pray frequently some people would consider it obsessively but those aren’t my kind of people. As much as, you would talk to yourself out loud. I talk to God (and myself still too) sometimes.

Now I am not a saint, and there are lots of times that I don’t consult God about my decision. Those are not my good days and usually when I make mistakes or fall from grace.  But on the whole, my relationship with God is completely changed in the last three years, and I would say that I intimately have a relationship now that is a daily thing instead of a weekly celebration.

For example, We have three prayers in Bibles and Bootcamps to help us when tempted.  I have them committed to memory because I use it so often.  Prayer doesn’t need this 15 minutes ordeal it can be a short, simple praise or request between you and God.  Like:

“Lord, Give me the desire and commitment to honor my temple daily. In Jesus name, Amen”

That simple!

That one is my favorite prayers in the Bible and Bootcamps because it helps me to stay on track. God is in the business of answering prayers, so I find that He daily delivers on that prayer.

Food Fixation

Three years ago when I started this weight loss journey, I wasn’t aware of food fixation. Through a Book Study that I did with my FaithFueled Life Members about two years ago. I learned more skills of dependency on God over food which I can share today.  I also think that food is one of the hardest addictions to overcome.  It’s so satisfying, accessible, legal, acceptable, and we are inundated with opportunities and encouragement to indulge. The difference between need and want can easily be blurred.

Three years walking through this journey has not only strengthened my bond with Christ but has instilled a passion in me to help others honor their temple.  The obstacles that I have overcome, victories I have won, and amazing opportunities I have experienced have all been because I decided to live my life differently, lean on God and honor my temple.

7 Tips I have learned in Three years from starting my weight loss journey

  1. Everything you can’t do God can; so, lean in and hold on for the ride.
    2. This is a journey, not a race.
    3. You have to show up and do things you don’t want to do (at first 😉).
    4. The consistent effort pays off
    5. Don’t count the days, count the gainz
    6. If you don’t challenge yourself, ou can’t progress.
    7. You don’t care how long it took you once you get there.

What’s Next?

That’s the hard part this year! I have no idea! I have never imagined getting on stage, being featured in National Publications or having two online fitness apps: Bibles and Bootcamps and PerFIcT App; that is really helping people or working at an amazing gym surrounded by amazing trainers.  Or to get to speak at an event to help empower women!

Right now, I can’t afford to do another Figure competition. I tried Ninja Warrior Training, and my ankle is still not ready, unfortunately.  After experiencing my first significant injury in my life and recovery was a faith experience as well. My ankle is not prepared to train for a Spartan Race which has also been on my things to do list.

Honestly, I am seeking something different than just dumbbells and barbells.  I have no idea what that looks like but it gives me lots of opportunities to try something new.  Like I did three years ago.

Thank you!

For those of you who prayed, encouraged, and motivated me in the last three years:

Your comments, likes, double taps, retweets, direct messages, gifs, and in real life hugs and love have also gotten me here today.  I really do appreciate your encouragement and support.  It’s been an amazing journey, and I am blessed to be where I am today!

“I still remember the days that I prayed for what I have now! “

I would love to help you with your journey!  bit.ly/FaithFueledLife

Sweat Pink X Soulcycle

Sweat Pink X at SoulCycle

I just got back from a trip to San Diego, and I had so many new experiences that I want to share.

I tried Soulcycle for the first time before I attended the Idea World Blogfest and Convention 2018.

If you check out my recap, you can see how much I learned.  Something that as valuable as learning is the connections I made to other influencers in fitness and nutrition.

In the past, I have always been so rushed on the first day of Blogfest, so I intentionally came in a day early.

Time for Sweat Pink Sisterhood

It was an excellent opportunity to connect with other Sweat Pink Sisters who came early or lived close by Idea World Blogfest.  Fellow SPAs Carleeh of Healthy Socialite and Erica of Sprinkles and Situps organized a Sweat Pink Soulcycle class. Just joining my Sweat Pink Sisters would be exciting and honestly, I didn’t do any research nor did I ever see a Soulcycle class. The most I knew was that it was a type of Spin class which I haven’t taken in over ten years.  I just wanted to Sweat with other Sweat Pink women, so I was in.

Searching for Pre-Workout

I went with Shenie of Sheylu Fitness and J’Que of J’Que Now.  We got there early and went to the Pressed Juicery in La Jolla, CA.  I usually drink a concoction pre-workout that has a lot of Beetroot, cherry juice and Yerba Mate among other things. I was looking for something comparable at the Juicery.

After taste testing a few different variations beet and green juices (which I wasn’t even looking for but tasted some interesting, mixes anyways) and checking out labels. I settled on this to give me the pre-workout boost.

I thought I was going to need something to get me through the Soulcycle at 6:30p at night West Coast time. After flying since 5:00 am East Coast time.  Not sure if it worked but I got through the class. Soulcycle is not my comfort zone at all.

First, you have to wear these inverted heeled shoes that clip into the bike but unless fastened to the pedal just feel awkward.  In the gym, I train at we promote barefoot training so special shoes it’s not my norm.

A Couple First Times

A few Sweat Pink Sisters came in their Sports Bra which I didn’t think too much about until the class let out and the entire class was drenched strutting in Sports Bras.  Again, new to this thing and now thinking I may have needed to do some research. These girls were beet red, soaking wet and I had no clue what just went on in their class, but I don’t sweat like that lifting weights, so I was a little concerned.

What’s Soulcycle Like?

The room is dark! I would show you, but they HIGHLY discouraged phones in the Soulcycle room.  “We’re bloggers we need the photos,” but just imagine a bunch of spin bikes like 30. Really close together in a pitched black small room with mirrors lined on the front wall. No ventilation and two little small fans in the corner which did not get turned on.  There is one prominent spin bike, the instructor’s bike that is on its own platform. She controls the lights, music, and mic. Can you see it? Not really! I told them I needed a photo.

So, I get my bike adjusted to my height and get clipped in. Before I was ready I decided I needed to practice clicking out. Cardio is not my thing and I would not be considered your Cardio Queen.  I actually get really nauseous with intervals or anything that makes my heart race and then cool down quickly. I am scared to try Orangetheory for that reason because I don’t want to be the fit chick who pukes. Not a good look! I also gulped down that Beet juice so even worse look. My ankle that is rehabbing needed extra help getting out but all-in-all I knew my puke plan.

Oh my HOTNESS

So, I’m on the bike ready to go and in walks Janelle, our instructor, like right off an Instagram account. Hops on the bike and immediately takes command of the class.  Janelle put us to work and about 3 minutes maybe less of bobbing and weaving and basically dancing and pedaling-which takes coordination. Immediately, I ripped my tank over my head and joined the Sports Bra crew. I have NEVER been so hot in my life while exercising. I also have never worked out in public in my Sports bra. With sweat literally pouring out of me I just tried to survive this was just the first few minutes.

Not as Experienced as I look

I have to remind people that I haven’t always been fit. I spent most of my life getting by with being skinny until I had my lil diva’s and my metabolism revolted against me.  I’ve done Zumba, a few muds run, lifted weights and try to be a yogi from time to time. Other than that I am not very experienced with exercise. This was new!

Use your Core

My quads were killing me- I didn’t think I could make it through the entire class. Besides sweating from every pore of my body and feeling like I was on fire. Meanwhile, trying to pedal while bobbing and weaving-on beat. I was so out of my comfort zone.  I told my girl J’Que I didn’t think I could keep doing it and she said, “use your core.” Never even dawned on me-I was too busy trying to sync to Janelle’s “choreography”- I think it was choreography. Basically, I was trying to duck, dive and pedal on the beat.

The core is everything people, and I have worked on mine for some time now.  Engaging my core seriously helped and allowed me to finish the class.  It was a crazy hour of inspirational chat and shimmying, shaking and pop locking (just kidding didnt pop and lock). We did grab some tiny dumbbells and burn out our arms for a few minutes-that felt familiar. Finally a brief stretching. Hallelujuah! I survived-barely.

My Poor Booty

I think I could Soulcycle more if it weren’t so expensive but I would need a butt pad. For the next three days no matter what I sat on a pillow or a bench my butt cheeks-literally my cheeks were so sore. That is what I had forgotten about the spin-spin butt. Good Lord!

Fun New Experience

It was a fun and new experience, and I am glad that I got to share it with my Sweat Pink Sisters.  I want to thank SoulCycle in La Jolla, CA for hosting Janelle and us for inspiring, motivating and literally tearing my butt up.  I can now say that I have tried Soulcycle and you never forget your first time. Lots of first for me in just one class.

Have you ever tried SoulCycle? What was it like for you?
