Two Steps to achieve success

Zig Ziglar once said, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” And each of us knows from our own experience that he is right. As humans, we prefer comfort and routines. As we go through life, one day flows into the next. We often work on autopilot, choosing easily over-complicated and failing to turn our good intentions into reality.

Those ‘good intentions are admirable, but without action, they’re just what you intend on eventually doing but never achieving. Good choices are hard to aim for without an action plan.

Do you have a plan for action in your life? Perhaps you want to eat a more healthy diet or lose the pandemic weight that has crept up on you. Maybe you want to establish a regular workout routine and stick with it this time. Perhaps you want to live a healthier lifestyle that honors your temple.

The keys to your success are two-fold:  steady the target and create momentum.

How to stop a moving target

Imagine if you were playing darts and tried to hit the bull’s eye. A sudden shift to the right or left can cause you to miss your target. Without accuracy, will you ever hit that target? Not likely.

Your good intentions are exactly like that moving target without setting specific goals. You would like to lose some weight, feel a little better, make a change in your diet–but without a guided plan or method, it may take longer than you expect, or you lose focus, and it never happens.

By assessing and addressing, you can finally hit the bull’s eye is to define your goals and write them down:

  • How do you want to feel in your skin?
  • What physical goals do you have that you can’t achieve now?
  • What kind of changes do you want to make in how you nourish your body?
  • How many days per week do you think you should move?
  • What would be the health benefits of honoring your temple?

“Once you know where you want to end up, you are much more likely to get there.” If you have a guided plan, you are sure to get there if you execute the plan. But you have to start making moves towards your goals. That is where momentum comes in.

Receive guidance to help you reach your goals

In his book, Eat that Frog, Brian Tracy discusses the Momentum Principle of Success. In Tracy’s words:

This principle says that although it may take tremendous amounts of energy to overcome inertia and get started initially, it then takes far less energy to keep going.” 1

There is much wisdom in his words. The most challenging part of achieving a goal is just getting started. That first day of doing things differently or the first experience of bypassing an unhealthy treat in favor of a food that will give you more energy can be daunting. There will always be a temptation without a plan and tools to overcome it. It makes it hard to abstain. Thank God for Jesus, who gave us access to Him anytime we need His strength. Bible and Bootcamps will guide you in prayers and meditations to use when tempted. It isn’t easy, and it certainly isn’t fun, but it will be worth it!

So how do you get that momentum?  How do you start moving? Accountability is the answer. Having someone else involved in your efforts can be the most important factor in your success. Prayer, worship, and devotion go a long way.

It is hard to change lifelong habits on your own. It would help if you had radical motivation to involve others in your efforts. Setting deadlines, making commitments, and entering contests all provide an external motivation that will carry you through even the toughest temptations. You need tools to help you succeed. Tangible things you can do to help you achieve the goal of living a healthier lifestyle and honoring your temple. Because I know it can be done.
